Map Portraits

We’ve been doing many portrait projects this year in Advanced art. I’ve also been stressing the importance of making meaningful artwork in my class. in our sketchbooks, we’ve been practicing with collage drawings and working with different medium and experimenting with creating texture and mark making. This was a quick one week lesson where the students focused on composing their portraits and experimenting with textured grounds. I have boxes full of old maps that I’ve been collecting and was really inspired by Mark Powell’s large map portraits when I came up with this lesson. To prepare for it, we watched and drew along with how to videos, focusing in on drawing each facial feature as realistically as we could.
