Before my sixth graders left for the winter break, they made these beautiful watercolor winter bird posters. I got the idea from here, but tweaked it a bit using my own bird template and adding a 3D element to the design using pieces of scrap foam board I had left over from a previous project with the Intermediate kids. For this project, the students were asked to use watercolor and crayon resist to create random washes of color and texture for the birds. We then created birch trees out of paper and black acyrlic paint. Paint, cut, paste and assemble! The project took only a week as we did things step by step, but the results are really great! And the kids were really happy with their results, some even took theirs home to hang on their Christmas trees.
