For the first major project of the year, the Intermediate students drew and painted their self portraits. Since they had been studying Frida Kahlo for a week, drawing her portrait and taking notes about her life, they were then asked to draw their own self portraits. They also had to incorporate at least 3 objects or symbols that represented something about their own lives, whether it was their hobbies, favorite foods, family, culture, clothing, etc. Frida Kahlo has always been one of my favorite self portraitists, and I love the way she speaks to her audience through strong imagery and symbols. This project was a good way for the students not only to practice drawing themselves, but to also allow them to think about how to interpret imagery and use these images to represent something about them.
