Scratchboard Mandala designs

There are a variety of scratchboards that are available to use, from rainbow colored ones to glitter, metallic gold and silver, and the surfaces can vary from glossy to matte. I’ve experimented with a number of these scratchboards and the one I always prefer is the more heavy weight 11×14″ scratchboard with a matte finish and glossy white  surface underneath. With metal carving tools, students can easily carve the surface away without pushing on the tool too heavily and the white surface can be watercolored in to add a more colorful finish if desired. The matte finish is also very easy to create quick textures using sandpaper, especially if my students are working on a lesson in texture like these watercolor animals we did a few years back (here and here).
